Artist in Residency
Information

Location is everything

Located in the remote tropical mountain jungle, Mauser Ecohouse creates a unique tranquil, inspirational, health-conscious, and community-minded living experience for the artists. The Mauser EcoHouse is situated in the beautiful rural Central Pacific region of Costa Rica on a 3 acre plot concealed in the lush jungle mountains. About 123km (about a 3-hour drive) from the capital city, San Jose, the Mauser EcoHouse is considered home to the artists that reside in it. The home has indoor or outdoor shared studio spaces with serene tropical surroundings. Individual or group projects can flourish in a beautiful haven alongside native Costa Rican jungle plants, flowers, animals, insects, and hundreds of birds. The property contains numerous indigenous fruit trees, edible plants, herbs, and a working greenhouse. Two banana circle composts and five swales are also on the site.

The Mauser Foundation offers residencies for a period of one month or more year-round for visual, performance, and literary artists. We encourage artists with a concentration in other fields to apply, as acceptance into the program will be judged on an individual basis.

The Mauser EcoHouse is a sanctuary for artists to create, explore, and experience Pura Vida - the Costa Rican way of life. Our private and shared studios are fully equipped with WiFi and provide natural light with views of the backyard gardens. The outdoor veranda provides the perfect opportunity to paint en plein aire or enjoy a leisurely nap in one of the hammocks.

Eligibility

Who can apply for the artist residency?

Mauser EcoHouse invites applications from individual artists, artistic collectives, and organizations worldwide. Artists of all ages (21+), at various stages of practice, cultural backgrounds, gender identities, and expressions are encouraged to apply. Please note the residency is remote. The EcoHouse is accessed via a gravel route in the rural Central Pacific region of Costa Rica. It is situated on a secluded three-acre plot within the Saint Michael Sustainable Community, nestled amidst the lush jungle mountains. Due to the remote location of the house, it is not currently wheelchair accessible.
